My self portrait is acrylic on canvas I wanted to portray myself in the style of Renoir. I really enjoy the look of his pieces and I wanted to bring a modern twist and make sure to add in my own personal style.
Inspiration
This is my first inspiration piece and the one I took the most from. I chose the pose and the background. I really enjoy the woman painted by Renoir.

I really enjoyed the hat on this particular model so I emulated it loosely in my piece.
|
The last was just for the style and the background of the overall piece I enjoy the style.

Planning Sketches
Process
The first Part of the process was taking the Pictures of myself as references for the final piece. To do this I taped my phone to the mirror that way I could pay attention to the poses and then set it on a 10 sec timer. I placed a lamp in one of my dresser drawers to give more light.
Making the Canvas
Creating the Canvas begins with smooching together four sides of the same length followed by then stapiling those corners as reinforcement. Followed by stretching a canvas over the frame I created and stapling that. The next thing to do before painting is priming the canvas with an acrylic primer. I then sketched my body and the chair I it on with the help of projection.
Painting
When I began to paint I painted by section so I first gathered all materials and categorized by coat/skin/background etc. Painting was really fun and I overall think that this was the most effective way for me to organize the whole process.
Reflection
Overall I am very happy with the piece as a whole. Of course since I always feel the need to over think I dislike myself in the painting very much I feel that I could have done a few more studies to perfect my face and hands in the piece. The background however I am very happy with I feel that I really enjoyed painting the background in the particular style.
Experimentation
I didn't really play with experimentation as far as painting goes. I think I just more or less messed around with posing and the final position I decided to paint myself in. The only other part that I had difficulty with was the background and mixing the correct colors together to create the correct hues and contrast between the land masses and the water behind me.
Connection to Act
Connection to ActClearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Both my piece and the work of Pablo Picasso were meant to make others aware to invoke feeling. Pablo created the collection How the Other Half Lives for a reason and in that I feel I made this piece with the intention to reach people widely.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The research is from art history sophomore year only went so far into these photographers. So upon further research I was able to learn more about how and why he began to do what he did.The way he did it.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
I have learned that many people especially today take things for granted and sort of sweep the problems we face under the rug. So I feel that instilling realization and awareness is important for artists of any generation.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
I researched many photographers and I think that both Eugéne and Jacob really stood out to me as far as what I wanted to accomplish with this piece. I intended to use Hispanic photographers like Enrique Metinides who photographed the real true horrors of crime during his time but I felt that I did not want my piece to come off as dark.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that anyone can make a difference through creating something that they feel passionate towards and that with enough will power it can make a difference.
