Pink with Pity
Exhibition
Within this piece I really wanted to capture an emotion through an opposite color from what you or I would expect that color to provoke. Pity is the feeling of sorrow evoked by the sufferings of others. I feel a lot of pity for our world at the moment so I created this piece with myself included. Size: 2ft x 2ft inches Medium: Acrylic Canvas Completion Date: August, 2019 |
Inspiration
I took most of my inspiration from some of the lyrics and overall imagery from the music video for Melanie Martinez's Pity Party.
|
I was really inspired by sequences of shapes and repetition of items in one solid piece and no better artist than Yayio Kusama
|
I always come back and take t Edvard's style of putting emotional value into a piece and I know that scream is a piece that a lot of people recognize and connect to.
|
Planning Sketches
The first thing I did was compile all of the major components I wanted to use in the piece. This is sort of a mind map I place out I am not really one to right or sketch things down in my head this is always how I map things I want to create.
|
Here I edited a picture of myself with a slight pink tint to get the affect of the outcome in the end and I played around with different styles of dots and backgrounds till I was happy with a blend of them.
|
Commonly I will take a picture of myself and map out the skin tone so for this to get a stronger feeling from the color pink I left out colors within the eyes and eyebrows to be replaced by pink.
Process
Lastly was the circles I traced circles from a can then picked out a sequence of 4 colors and painted accordingly.
Experimentation
As far as experimenting goes I think I thought of ideas more than actually putting them down on the canvas so for example the eyes I left blank white so that it leaves an impression of pity that fills the body. Also the colors in the piece coordinate together. I also added pink sparkly lining to outline the figure.
Reflection
The overall piece is the concept I wanted to create and I am happy with the look and concepts I created. I think I would like to create the same concept but in a different way maybe manipulation could help but I think also maybe using a different media might also help to really push the emotional connection to pity.
