Within the Piece titled "Trouble behind the rows" I wanted to create elements that are familiar sites within my state. As well as connecting them to my self and the connection I have to where I'm from. Whenever I am away from home whether that meant I drove to Texas to visit my family I always know when were close to home when I see corn fields it's something I cherish. However seeing these beautiful crops always makes me think of some of the terrible things that happen in order to gain this crop.
Inspiration

Hommage a Goya Odilon Redon (1840-1916) I really enjoyed the solitude that I got from looking at this piece its surrealistic and I was mainly inspired by the head of the woman in the middle. |

Very much so I was inspired by our corn fields here in Wisconsin. I very often toggle back and forth from here and Texas where my family is from and we always drive I always know when we are almost home when I can see the corn fields. It's an amazing sight when you've been in a car for more that 20 something hours. I always look forward to seeing it. |

Green Corn Stalks 1888 by Vincent Van Gogh I really wanted to study other artists pictures of corn as it can be expressed in painting in my forms as everyone has their personal styles however I really enjoyed Gogh's painting of corn stalks |
Planning Sketches
In this first sketch I really enjoyed the stalks that I drew however I was unsatisfied with the figure that I drew. More or less I think in was the placement of the figure I went back to Odilon and his figure but within my own piece I needed to compensate for the stalks of corn as my canvas is really long leaving little room for multiple focal points.
|
Keeping in mind the size and length of my canvas I added less stalks into the second sketch and focus on the figure that way I can keep the two focal points I wanted to discuss in my piece so I placed the figure first and sort of meshed the stalks around it.
|
The third time around I just focused on what other little things I could add in for symbolism so I re applied some of the butterflies that I put in project 1. To sort of re iterate the emotions that they give off. In relations to Edvard I know that he put in multiple butterflies throughout a numerous amount of his pieces.
Process
As far as process I have explained my method before however with this painting i took a different approach and painted the background first. As normally I would have painted the stalks first and then went in with blue around them. However this piece I didn't really use any reference pieces I just free handed the stalks on memory along with the corn and the butterfly that I added in later on. I enjoyed this more as normally I have to worry about the nooks and crannies of areas I didn't get to cover in the background or if I went over the corn stalk and had to restart it over again.
Experimentation
Reflection
Overall I really wanted to create the same project and concept but with a different medium however I was unsure of what medium to create so now I plan on creating paintings with elements of other mediums such as like beading or embroidery. I really wish I would have put more time into the piece to make some of the colors more vibrant and clear to read. I plan on spending more time on it in the near future. The most difficult part for me was painting the stalks and getting the strokes that I liked. Overall in the end going back into it I really appreciate myself for choosing to paint in a different methods it made it easier and fun on my end. Painting for me is always fun however I tend to stress myself out over not being able to get the consistency or if I am unable to fix a problem I created in the canvas as it really bothers me. As I stated above I also really want to experiment and see if I am able to continue to use acrylic but in a new manner so that it may be manipulated and read as something else.
Connection to Act
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Both my piece and the work of Pablo Picasso were meant to make others aware to invoke feeling. Pablo created the collection How the Other Half Lives for a reason and in that I feel I made this piece with the intention to reach people widely.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The research is from art history sophomore year only went so far into these photographers. So upon further research I was able to learn more about how and why he began to do what he did.The way he did it.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
I have learned that many people especially today take things for granted and sort of sweep the problems we face under the rug. So I feel that instilling realization and awareness is important for artists of any generation.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
I researched many photographers and I think that both Eugéne and Jacob really stood out to me as far as what I wanted to accomplish with this piece. I intended to use Hispanic photographers like Enrique Metinides who photographed the real true horrors of crime during his time but I felt that I did not want my piece to come off as dark.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that anyone can make a difference through creating something that they feel passionate towards and that with enough will power it can make a difference.
