Exhibition Text
Majority of my inspiration came from an iconic German block print artist named Käthe Kollwitz. As well as a scene from Tim Burton's Alice and Wonderland film of 2010 as it was a major part of my upcoming. Essentially all of my pieces or majority of them have some relation with personal and social identity. With this piece I envisioned the torso in the sky as the blank canvas to which our head is so delicately placed upon. Sometime people hide who they are they may have multiple heads changing for different people. So the river of heads on the bottom are no longer useful no longer worthy of the torso. As the Red Queen would behead anyone who didn't fit up to par with her standards.
Inspiration
I think I often wish and like to shock or create major emotions within the piece. Käthe Kollwitz was a major inspiration as she created pieces in her time that were used to spread awareness of the horrors surrounding the war and so on. All have a sense of drama whether they are negative in connotation or not.

I chose a German artist who did amazing Block Prints Käthe Kollwitz
Kollwitz, Käthe. “Käthe Kollwitz. The Widow II (Die Witwe II) from War (Krieg). 1922, Published 1923 | MoMA.” Lee Bontecou. Untitled. 1959 | MoMA, www.moma.org/collection/works/69686?classifications=any&date_begin=Pre-1850&date_end=2019&locale=en&page=1&q=K%C3%A4the%2BKollwitz&with_images=1. |
Planning Sketches
Process
Process wise it was actually very simple
Top 3
First off I had to Draw out the design and the carve it out using the speed ball tool with numerous different sized tips. Then I layed out my materials for printing Which includes a metal plate, water based ink a spreading spatula, roller and a bamboo baren.
Middle 3
I took the roller after spreading the ink onto the metal plate with the spatula and began rolling the roller on the plate to evenly disperse the ink. After which I rolled the roller onto the piece of linoleum.
Last 3
After I rolled the ink evenly onto the linoleum I placed a place of paper a top the plate the took the bamboo baren and rubbed the paper to transfer the image onto the paper.

Experimentation
As far as experimentation goes it is kind of difficult to go back and carve in more details if majority of the linoleum is already carved out. However I made over 4 prints some I applied more pressure with the baren and for others I went over it lightly. As you can see in the second photo the clouds and torso were not really picking up the ink so I had to wash the plate and re carve those areas for a better result.
Reflection
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and it's effect upon your artwork?
Both my piece and the work of Jacob Riis were meant to make others aware to invoke feeling. Jacob created the collection How the Other Half Lives for a reason and in that I feel I made this piece with the intention to reach people widely.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The research is from art history sophomore year only went so far into these photographers. So upon further research I was able to learn more about how and why he began to do what he did.The way he did it.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. While you researched your inspiration?
I have learned that many people especially today take things for granted and sort of sweep the problems we face under the rug. So I feel that instilling realization and awareness is important for artists of any generation.
What is the central idea and theme around your inspirational research?
I researched many photographers and I think that both Eugéne and Jacob really stood out to me as far as what I wanted to accomplish with this piece. I intended to use Hispanic photographers like Enrique Metinides who photographed the real true horrors of crime during his time but I felt that I did not want my piece to come off as dark.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred that anyone can make a difference through creating something that they feel passionate towards and that with enough will power it can make a difference.
