Clowns in the sky
Size 3ftx3ft
Medium Acrylic and markers Date 11/21/19 In this Piece titled "Clowns in the sky" I wanted to relate this piece to project 1 and really evoke emotions through the piece three different faces revolving around the blank canvas of us ourselves. On a daily basis our expressions change and our emotions go through phases. Often times I feel as if we all somewhat suffer and we just ignore our feelings we put on this blank expression, and just go on through our day as if nothing is wrong. |
Inspiration
More or less I wanted to make sure that clowns were included in this piece. Clowns to me can cause and mean a multitude of emotions within different people. In particular I really enjoy the different ways that all clowns paint there faces. For me personally I enjoy clowns they make me happy and joyful.

This is a South Korean idol named IU and to me i wanted to use her as the model as she is a really simple woman. In more recent years within the music community there have been a total of three suicides and she always expresses her emotions and feeling through her music for others.
Lyrics that inspired me "Why does she like that kind of outfit? What’s that blank face she’s making? Maybe it's because of stress? I'm worried about her |
This is one of my current favorite artists Hikari Shimoda. The pieces are so colorful and yet at the same time the colors also remain muted basics and or only limited to 5 colors maximum. I enjoy all there little blank expressions .

Planning Sketches
These first few sketches I knew that I needed a main character. whether or not to include them all with faces is something I needed to do later. I really enjoyed the look of having no pupils no color within the eyes.
|
More or less I knew the background thaat I wanted to create so all I needed was main characters and through sketching I really enjoyed two toned faces light and dark.I really enjoyed this sketch.

Process
Process wise I always like to paint in the paint by number way. As far as process I have explained my method before however with this painting I took a different approach and painted the background first. As normally I would have painted the faces and main items first and then went in with blue around them. However this piece I didn't really use any reference pieces I just free handed the faces on memory from the sketches. I enjoyed this more as normally. For the coat itself I mixed 3 different purples in order to get the outcome I wished for.
- Background base color
- Dry
- Sketch faces and objects
- fill in with all basics first
- dry
- add detail
Reflection
In this piece I really enjoyed the idea of this piece I loved the clown sketches that I came up with. However I overall really enjoyed the piece. I had a lot of trouble with the faces on the piece itself, the first clown i painted the details first and then went back in with the skin tone. For the second two I painted skin tone first then once dry I went back into it with a marker and pens. However in doing this I lost the two toned aspect and larger features from the first however the skin looks better on those. Looking back I would've painted back on the skin tone instead of using markers and pens. However I really liked the outcome of the piece as a whole I may however wish to go back and add more details such as in the sky and or foreground.

I have learned that many people especially today take things for granted even with there own lives we take a problem so small and blow it into something way bigger than it needs to be. So I feel that instilling realization and awareness is important for artists of any generation.

I intended to use Hispanic photographers like who photographed the real true horrors of crime during his time but I felt that I did not want my piece to come off as dark.

I inferred that anyone can make a difference through creating something that they feel passionate towards and that with enough will power it can make a difference.
